North Carolina Steps Up Competition for Clean Energy Manufacturing Jobs

July 20, 2010 4:23 PM | Posted By: Rich Crowley, Market Research Manager

The General Assembly declared to all competitors in the global renewable energy supply chain – home-grown and otherwise – that North Carolina is open for business.  On July 10, in an 84-19 vote legislators passed House Bill 1829 entitled “Renewable Energy Incentives", sending Governor Perdue a package of improved market based incentives for our state’s rapidly growing renewable energy and energy efficiency industries.  These measures built on the framework of Session Law 2000-128 , which lapsed in 2006, and provide clear, tangible incentives for businesses to develop both new and existing manufacturing capabilities.  With the adoption of a state Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) in 2007 and the removal of several regulatory and policy barriers in subsequent years, North Carolina has taken the first steps to position itself as the leading player in the southeast region for developing a vibrant state and regional renewable energy and energy efficiency economy.  North Carolina cannot compete in the global energy economy without policies, regulations and attitudes similar to other southeast states.
