Charlotte, known as the New Energy Capitol, is living up to its name. The following are two succies stories from the region.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY GRANTS
UNC Charlotte recently became the first academic institution to receive a grant through a new U.S. Department of Energy program aimed at more efficiently weatherizing the homes of low-income Americans, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The $2 million grant was awarded to Thomas Gentry, assistant professor of architecture at UNCC, and Robert Cox, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, the newspaper reported. The money will make 800 low-income families' homes in North Carolina more energy-efficient through the Weatherization Innovation Pilot Program, the paper said.

SUSTAINABLE WEATHERIZATION
The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) came into being under Title IV of the Energy Conservation and Production Act of 1976, which was in
response to sharp increases in energy prices triggered by the 1973 OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) oil embargo against the United States. It defines the long-standing approach to weatherization that predominantly involves increasing insulation, sealing air leaks, and replacing energy
inefficient equipment and appliances to reduce energy usage.
