Strata Solar Begins Construction of Western Cluster of Solar Farms
Strata Solar Hires 170 for Latest Group of Solar Projects
Strata Solar and the National Youth Chamber of Commerce (NYCC) recently held job fairs at the Urban League of Central Carolinas in Charlotte and Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. The purpose was to hire a new workforce to build six new utility scale solar farms in the western part of the state. The events were a huge success with nearly 250 people attending resulting in Strata Solar extending offers to 170 of the attendees.
Semprius Inc., a provider of concentrating photovoltaic solar modules, says it will officially open its first production facility on Sept. 26. in Henderson, N.C.
The company says it plans to hire more than 250 employees over the next several years.
The new facility uses a proprietary manufacturing process to produce solar modules with a 33.9% conversion efficiency, according to Semprius. Developed with support from the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Semprius' proprietary micro-transfer printing process enables the use of what the company says is the world's smallest solar cell.
The Sampson County Board of Commissioners has approved a requestto amend the county's zoning ordinance to include solar farm as a special use in residential agriculture and commercial districts. Gainey Solar LLC is seeking to construct a 2 megawatt facility off Governor Moore Road, Clinton.
It’s not a solar company, it’s Walmart or IKEA, depending on how you look at the data in the new report, “Solar Means Business: Top Commercial Solar Customers in the U.S.” The report, by the Vote Solar Initiative and Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) found that across the U.S. commercial entities, including nonprofits and governments have installed 2.3 gigawatts of photovoltaics as of mid-2012.
The organizations used public databases and contacted company representatives to gather the information in the report. “This is our first ever review of this,” said Rosalind Jackson, Vote Solar’s director of communications and development. The research may not include every commercial system in the U.S., since there is no absolute clearinghouse of all installation data in the U.S. However, they made the best effort to collect all data they could. It also found that during the first half of 2012, over 3,600 commercial systems came online in the U.S.
(Solar Novus Today) - GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) today released U.S. Solar Market Insight: 2nd Quarter 2012 . The report finds that US solar achieved its second-best quarter in history, having installed 742 megawatts of solar power, and the best quarter on record for the utility market segment.
Utility installations hit 477MW in the second quarter, with eight states posting utility installations of 10 megawatts or greater: California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Illinois, North Carolina, New Mexico, and New Jersey. In total, the U.S. now has 5,700 megawatts of installed solar capacity, enough to power more than 940,000 households.
From Town of Cary:
This week, the Town of Cary and its solar contractor, FLS Energy, broke ground on the Town’s first renewable energy project and one of the largest solar system installations in the area. Located at the South Cary Water Reclamation Facility, 4900 West Lake Road, the completed system will have the capacity to generate 1.8 megawatts of electricity, or roughly enough energy to power 174 homes for a year. Construction is anticipated to be complete in late Fall 2012 and marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
In addition to paying $35,000 annually to lease the land from the Town of Cary, all construction, maintenance and operations costs associated with the system will be paid for by FLS Energy.
Canadian Solar Inc. (the "Company", or "Canadian Solar") (NASDAQ: CSIQ), one of the world's largest solar companies, and Mortenson Construction, a leading engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) Contractor, broke ground on a 2.5 MW PV solar installation in Laurinburg, NC, an agricultural community in Scotland county. The solar project is set to be completed in December 2012.
Canadian Solar, the project owner is responsible for overall project delivery and will supply modules to Mortenson Construction, which will complete the design and engineering services, as well as the installation of the equipment. Developed by Charlotte, NC-based Birdseye Renewable Energy, the PV solar system will be located on a 10-acre site and is expected to generate approximately 3,483 MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power 300 homes.
In August 2012, Baker Renewable Energy (Raleigh, North Carolina) has installed a solar thermal system comprising 138 individual solar thermal collectors which is equivalent to a 276 kW photovoltaic (PV) system. This solar heating system represents the largest solar hot water system in Virginia, Baker Renewable Energy emphasizes.
The solar thermal system will offset about 30% of the jail's natural gas usage, and will provide 2.5 million gallons of hot water per year to the facility.
