NCSEA Statement on Changes to Non-Residential Solar Net Metering

RALEIGH, N.C. – In December, the North Carolina Utilities Commission issued an order in the Duke Energy Carolinas rate case, which approved the utility’s proposed changes to non-residential solar compensation. The changes to these solar rates will greatly affect the economics of solar investments by small businesses and local governments and closely resemble the changes approved in Duke Energy Progress territory in October 2023. Additionally, these changes were ordered with a very short implementation timeline of only seventeen days, making it difficult for solar installers and their customers, North Carolina ratepayers, to adapt. The aggressive implementation timeline and lack of a customer bill savings calculator for non-residential customers will make this transition difficult. The NC Sustainable Energy Association is disappointed in this decision by the NC Utilities Commission and will continue to advocate for solutions that make it easier for customers to adopt low-cost, reliable sources of clean energy.
